Questions we hear most

Does my panel need replacing?

Not always. A 100-amp panel in good shape can carry a heat pump, or a range, and sometimes both. We add up what the house already runs and what you want to add, and the number tells us. If the panel is a brand with a known problem or full of double-tapped breakers, we say so and show you.

Do I need a bigger panel for a heat pump or an EV charger?

Sometimes, and often not. Each takes a share of the panel’s amps. A load calculation says whether both fit, one fits, or a load-management device or a larger service is the cheaper route.

Do I need a permit, and who pulls it?

Panel, service and new-circuit work usually needs one. We file it, schedule the inspection after the work and put the sign-off in your folder. The permit fee is passed through on the quote at cost.

How long does a panel upgrade take, and will the power be off?

The power is off for part of one working day while the old panel comes out and the new one goes in. If the meter base or mast changes, the utility disconnects and reconnects at the meter, and we book that visit with them. We give you the date range before you sign.

What does the first visit cost, and is it credited?

The visit has a flat fee, told to you when you book, and it is credited to the work if you go ahead within 30 days. One electrician comes, reads the panel, looks at the meter and the wall you want to use, and photographs all of it.

Are you licensed and insured, and how do I check?

Yes. The license line is in the footer of every page, with the class and its meaning. Vermont’s Office of Professional Regulation keeps the public lookup, so you can search the license yourself. Ask us for the insurance certificate and we will send it.

Will my insurer care about old wiring?

Some insurers ask about knob-and-tube or a fuse box when you buy or renew. We can write down what is in the house and what we found, which is what most underwriters ask to see. Ask your insurer what it needs first.

Are there rebates for this work?

Your utility and Efficiency Vermont run programs for heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and some chargers. Each sets its own amounts and rules, and they change, so read the current program page before you buy. We write the invoice the way the forms ask for it.

Can I send photos instead of booking a visit first?

Yes. Text a photo of the inside of your panel door, the main breaker and your meter to the number below. We can usually tell you what we would check before we come, though we do not price from a photo.

Do you do emergency work?

No. We schedule planned work, Monday to Friday, so there is no night rate and no after-hours number to call. If something is sparking, smells of burning or is hot to the touch, call 911 first. If it is safe to reach, turn off its breaker, and call us the next morning to book the repair.

Still have one?

Call us or send a note. We read every message and call back on the next working day.
