“They counted our amps on paper before quoting. We kept the 100-amp panel, added a subpanel for the heat pump, and the quote said why.”

Your panel decides what the house can add
Heat pumps, induction ranges and EV chargers each take amps. We check what your panel can carry, wire the circuits, and write the invoice your utility’s rebate form asks for.

What your panel can carry
A heat pump, a range and a charger all want amps
Every circuit you add takes a share of the panel. This is how the usual additions sit in a 100-amp house and a 200-amp house. The breaker sizes in amps (A) are typical; the nameplate on your unit sets the real one, and a load calculation settles the rest.

Older houses
Burlington houses were not wired for this
A lot of the housing here was built before anyone planned for a heat pump or a car in the driveway: plaster over lath, cloth-covered cable, a 60- or 100-amp service. We open the walls we have to and no more, run new cable where it can go, and patch to a stage you agree on before we start.
If we find old wiring we did not expect, we stop, show you and quote it before going further.

The load calculation
How we count your panel
Read the panel
The main breaker, the label inside the door, the meter base and what is wired to every breaker.
List what runs
The furnace or boiler, the dryer, the well pump, the shop outlets: each circuit the house already uses.
Add the new loads
Each new unit at its nameplate rating, from the model you are considering, not a guess.
Get a number
We work the load calculation on paper, show you the result and say whether the panel, a subpanel or a larger service is the fit.
Services
What we wire
This is the work we do. A small outlet repair or a new light is not on the list.
Panel and service upgrades
More amps at the meter, a new panel, or a subpanel for the new loads.
Panel upgradesHeat pump circuits
Power and a disconnect for heat pumps, mini-splits and heat pump water heaters.
Heat pump circuitsInduction and EV circuits
A 240-volt line for a range, a dryer or a charger in the garage.
Induction and EVOlder-house wiring
Plaster walls, cloth cable and two-prong outlets, opened and patched with care.

Vermont rebates
Your utility sets the rebate. We keep the paperwork straight.
Burlington Electric Department, Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont each run their own programs, with their own amounts, income rules and lists of approved equipment. They change, so we send you to the current page instead of printing a number here.
What we control is the invoice: every unit listed by make, model and serial number, the panel and circuits photographed when the work is done, and the permit sign-off in your folder.

Questions before the first visit
Does my panel need replacing?
Not always. A 100-amp panel in good shape can carry a heat pump, or a range, and sometimes both. We add up what the house already runs and what you want to add, and the number tells us. If the panel is a brand with a known problem or full of double-tapped breakers, we say so and show you.
Do I need a bigger panel for a heat pump or an EV charger?
Sometimes, and often not. Each takes a share of the panel’s amps. A load calculation says whether both fit, one fits, or a load-management device or a larger service is the cheaper route.
What does the first visit cost, and is it credited?
The visit has a flat fee, told to you when you book, and it is credited to the work if you go ahead within 30 days. One electrician comes, reads the panel, looks at the meter and the wall you want to use, and photographs all of it.
Are there rebates for this work?
Your utility and Efficiency Vermont run programs for heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and some chargers. Each sets its own amounts and rules, and they change, so read the current program page before you buy. We write the invoice the way the forms ask for it.
Do you do emergency work?
No. We schedule planned work, Monday to Friday, so there is no night rate and no after-hours number to call. If something is sparking, smells of burning or is hot to the touch, call 911 first. If it is safe to reach, turn off its breaker, and call us the next morning to book the repair.
Send us a photo of your panel
Tell us what you want to add. A photo of the inside of the panel door and your meter lets us say what we would check before the visit.
